: Translation
Purpose and Activities:
A Brief Introduction
The Translation Division was
established by Maulana Azad National
Urdu University in July 1998. The
main objective of
the Translation
Division was to translate and
prepare study materials for
different courses offered by the
University.
In the present day context of
globalization the importance of
translation has enormously
increased. The role of translation,
especially in India, in its multi
cultural and multi lingual scenario
assumes greater significance. Urdu
is one of the leading and widely
spoken Indian language. Translation
can simultaneously play an important
role in the growth of Urdu language
both in transferring contemporary
knowledge and culture to/from Urdu.
Certain issues of crucial have come
up for consideration over the period
of time. In the past various efforts
made in this area by different
institutions like Dilli College,
Scientific Society and more
importantly, Darut Tarjuma, Osmania
University, Hyderabad are laudable.
Though, these efforts were valuable
the need of the hour is to extend
this journey towards new
destinations and keep the struggle
in tune with the present pace of
time.
With the help of
study and reference materials
produced by various institutions and
keeping emerging linguistic and
scholastic scenario in view, the
Translation Division produced study
materials through translation,
adaptation and original writing.
Thus, it functioned as the
supply-line and backbone of the
University as it was rightly
conceived.
In the beginning,
no permanent appointment was made,
but the division involved some
dedicated academicians having
expertise in translation and subject
scholarship. To obtain the
objectives of Translation Division
and to improve its performance in
particular and the University in
general, the Division team
contributed dedicatedly. So far,
during past 10 years nearly 316
books on various modern subjects
were prepared, translated and
adapted. The details are as follows:

After the appointment of five
regular academic staff members
in September 2004
the translation Division was
converted into the Department of
Translation.
The Department of
Translation plans to
add teaching and research
activity to its already mandated
work i.e. Translation
for the fulfillment of basic
needs of the university and also
to prepare a new generation to
face the latest challenges of
changing scenario.
In
April 2007 one more new
lecturer was added under the
innovative scheme. The present
staff consists with Ph. D. and
two with M.Phil qualifications.
They are drawn from various
fields. Besides teaching and
translation
they are busy in the work of
research and development
covering the areas:

The Department of
Translation
has the vision to
make it
The Advanced Centre for
Translation Studies in
future. With modern translation
laboratory, teaching and
research. Both of which
have never been taken up
together anywhere in the
country. Both these activities
would be inter-dependent on the
maxim that practice without
theory is baseless and theory
without practice is useless.

COURSE :
Department has launched M.A.
in Translation course
from the current academic year. The course is spread
over fou
r
semesters. Admission will be through Entrance
Test. To
maintain quality of the course as well as performance
intake is limited to 15 only. Admission process is going
on. Last date of submission of form is 22-06-2006.
Application can be down loaded from the same website.
As per the maximum intake through Entrance,
fifteen potential translators would hopefully be taught
and trained into actual translators with variegated
quality substance concerning major areas of knowledge.
Also, translation work of the Department would be
assigned to each student in the form of Project under
the proper intra-department supervision, which would, if
found standard, not only be acknowledged with their
names but also as per the norms of the University,
remuneration would be paid to them. Thus, it would not
only be job-oriented but also job-involving.
