Vision and Mission The Department of Mass Communication and Journalism launched the Post-Graduation Programme in 2004 to train students who want to pursue careers in the ever expanding field of Media having in its gamut electronic and print media, advertising, public relations, documentary filmmaking and web-journalism. MANUU is the first Central University in the country to start a PG Course in Mass Communication through Urdu as medium of instruction. The MA-MCJ is full time course and 75% attendance is compulsory and other rules and regulations of the University are applicable. The main purpose of the department is to produce professional journalists, well trained and well equipped who can cope up with the emerging challenges in the field of Electronic and Print Media. In particular to fulfill the need of Urdu Media by providing professionally trained manpower. In this regard the department is working hard to achieve high standards in media teaching and research.
The School of Mass Communication and Journalism is situated in sophisticated media environment at a newly constructed Instructional Media Centre building.
To enhance the practical training of the students of Mass Communication & Journalism, the infrastructure of Instructional Media Centre is also being used to provide the necessary training for Audio/ Video media.
FUTURE PLANS In this endeavor, the department plans to build high standards of research and proposes to launch M. Phil/ Ph. D. programs in Mass Communication and Journalism. The department intends to run four P.G. Diploma courses in specialized emerging areas like Script Writing, Non-linear Editing, Videography and Graphics & Animation and also a three-year graduation Program i.e. B.A. in Mass Communication and Journalism. The department also trying to contribute significantly in producing audio and video materials for distance learners of MANUU.

THE INFRASTRUCTURE
The Department is located on the 1st floor of the Instructional Media Centre. This gives advantage to our students for their practical inputs for TV and Radio Productions. The Instructional Media Centre has a standard instructional audio studio and video studio, MTV studio on multi-cam online setup with all associated facilities, and has several units of outdoor shooting.
Comprehensive training is provided on single camera and multi camera techniques. The students have facilities to learn and get trained in print media, post production editing like FCP & AVID, computer graphics and animation and the use of teleprompter for news reading.
The infrastructure of IMC consists of a Video Studio, Audio Studio, associated control rooms, and a comprehensive post production facility by way of audio edit suits, non-linear editing, computer graphics and animation etc.
Video studio has a multi camera online setup which is equipped by high-end broadcast grade cameras (Sony make D-55PH), with adjoining PCR, a 32 channel audio mixer and associated production gear. Lighting in the video studio is provided by a flexible, motorized lighting grid containing cool lights.
HDTV compatible cameras (HVR-ZIP and PD170 of SONY) are provided for outdoor shooting. Audio studio with its associated control room is equipped for digital audio recording on Audio work station.
Recently, the department of MCJ has acquired two graphics workstations with sophisticated softwares for the usage of 2D & 3D animations.
A state of the art e-class room facility is also bearing created with the help of which lectures can be recorded live and edited into video lesson for distribution through LAN / VAN and such other platforms.
A Computer Laboratory equipped with adequate software to print in-house Lab Journal is also there enable students to work on their assignments and other course-related projects, especially in print and electronic media. The Computer lab will be shortly equipped for creative multimedia presentations.
A computer room with internet facility is provided to the studnets in the department. Students have access to TV cable and more than a dozen English & Urdu Newspapers and magazines in the Seminar Hall.
Students are encouraged to have hands-on experience of the equipment and program production in audio / video for the distance learners.
PEDAGOGY
A large number of eminent journalist, filmmakers and media persons of national and international stature are associated with the department in various capacities. M.J.Akber is associated with MCJ Dept. as visiting Professor. Besides that, every week the department organizes a Guest Lecture where students get a chance to interact with persons of eminence in the field of media. Multimedia-aided teaching is done by the faculty as well as the Guest Faculty in the department. The syllabus that the department follows is duly updated incorporating the changing needs of the market.
ELIGIBILITY
The admission to MA (Mass Communication and Journalism) is through Entrance Test which is generally held in May/ June. The eligibility criteria is any Graduate with a minimum of 45% marks in aggregate from a recognized university in any discipline. Candidates must have studied Urdu as a subject at least till tenth standard level or its equivalent, and must demonstrate the ability to read and write in Urdu in the entrance examination.
COURSE DESIGN
The program is of two years duration and the medium of instruction and examination in Urdu. The course is divided into four semesters and there are four papers to be covered in each semester. Hence, the entire program comprises of sixteen papers. The course mostly follows the curriculum recommended by UGC. However, some changes may be made in accordance with the specific requirement of the students’ clientele on recommendations of Board of Studies, School Board, and other statutory bodies of the University.
The course is designed to ensure that students acquire competency in Media skills as well as a thorough understanding of communication processes in the Indian social context.
At present, the course is made up of a combination of papers dealing with communication skills in print and electronic media like Writing, Reporting & Editing, Radio Production, TV &Video Production, Advertising and Public Relations and theoretical orientation comprising Communication Theories, Development Communication, Media Ethics and Communication Research Methodologies.
Skill training is complemented by rigorous reading and analysis of contemporary issues in media. Students are required to participate in field activities.
The MA – MCJ program has been designed in such a way to provide the student a balanced offering of communication theory, print journalism, Radio Production and TV, Video Production. The theory courses involve presentation of seminar papers, practical assignments in areas such as writing for print media and electronic media, a research project, class presentations and other assignments.
In the 1st semester, students are also required to print and publish a Lab Journal. The students research, write and design a Lab Journal named ‘Izhar’. This is being published by the department.
In the 2nd semester each student will also have to write/ execute and report a research project under the guidance of faculty members. Students will also work in groups to produce Radio Documentary also.
As part of the syllabus, students will work in groups to produce documentary films and other genres of video production in the 3rd and 4th semesters.
The students also produce programmes on ENG /EFP/including production on Multicamera setup both during their IIIrd and IVth semesters.
SCHOLARSHIP
All the students of MCJ get a monthly Scholarship of Rs. 1,000/-(Rupees one thousand only). This shall enable students from poor economics background to pursue professional courses. Besides the University Scholarship, the department encourages and guides the students to avail scholarship from various govt. and non-government organisations.
INTERNSHIP
After completion of the 2nd Semester, each student will have to undergo four weeks of internship in reputed Media organizations (e.g. Newspapers, Radio Channels, TV Channels, Production Houses, Ad Agencies, Market Research Firms, and NGOs etc.).
PLACEMENT
Most of our Passed out students are working as media professionals in various newspapers and TV channels.
HOSTEL FACILITY
Limited Hostel facility is available in the campus for both boys and girls. The particulars regarding fees, rules etc, can be collected from the concerned authorities of the University.
