The Department of English
I. About the Department The Department of English, MANUU was established in 2004. It began its academic activities the same year by offering MA in English programme. The Department envisaged its role of generating knowledge through its MPhil and PhD programmes which it commenced from 2006 and 2007 respectively. The Department conducts regular national conferences and also brings out a peer-reviewed bi-annual international journal to advance scholarship and heighten research activities. The Department seeks areas of collaboration from advance research centres in language technology and literature studies. It endeavors to provide a field of literary creativity and linguistic contribution to its students. One of its primary objectives is to give an impetus to bilingual research in English and Urdu so that an interdisciplinary research is carried out and an honest contribution can be made in academic world. In future the Department sees itself as a sophisticated hub for English–Urdu advanced bilingual research activities.

III. Programmes:
The Department of English offers MA, MPhil, and PhD programmes of study. The details of the programmes are as follows:
Master of Arts (MA) Duration: Two Years; Intake: 62; Mode of Admission: Merit in Graduation (Degree) Examination The Masters Programme in English is spread over four semesters in two years. The Programme offers 17 papers with optional (specializations) in the fourth semester. The Department has shifted the focus of the syllabus of this programme from chronological-based to genre-based taking into account the present needs of teaching English at international level.
The Eligibility Criterion Graduate from a recognized university/equivalent with at least 45 % of marks in aggregate and in English. Those who studied English literature in qualifying degree examination and studied Urdu at any level shall be given preference. The order of preference is as follows: a) English Literature/Honours in qualifying degree programme + knowledge of Urdu, b) English as optional in qualifying degree programme + Knowledge of Urdu, c) General/Compulsory English studied as language in qualifying degree programme + knowledge of Urdu, d) English Literature/Honours in qualifying degree programme, e) English as optional in qualifying degree programme f) General/Compulsory English studied as language in qualifying degree programme
The Research Programmes The MPhil and PhD programmes with their organized and individually customized coursework, examination, and guided research make the Department of English at MANUU, the most sought after all over the country. The financial support provided to all the regular-stream students meets students’ research needs. As part of their package, PhD students are required to teach and tutor one course in their first year.
Master of Philosophy (MPhil) Duration: 18 month; Intake: 15 (Subject to the Availability of the Supervisors in the Department) Mode of Admission: Merit in the Entrance Test and Interview MPhil programme is spread over three semesters. In the first semester the research student is required to do three courses. The first course is Research Methodology, the second, Literary Criticism and Literary Theory and the third one shall be from ELT/Fiction/Poetry/Drama. The second semester shall have three presentations/seminars/colloquiums on the topic in which the research student proposes to carry out his/her investigation. And in the third semester, the research student is required to submit his/her dissertation. Each course is assessed from 100 marks, internal assessment carries 30 marks and external examination carries 70 marks. An extension of one semester can be sanctioned by the Dean on the recommendation of the supervisor and HoD. However, no fellowship shall be provided for such extension.
The Eligibility Criterion Masters Degree in English from a UGC recognized university with at least 55% marks in aggregate in the subject concerned. The candidates who qualified JRF/NET/SLET are exempted from entrance test. However, they are compulsorily required to attend the interview and qualify in it, to be considered eligible for admission. The date of the entrance test is announced every year in the University Prospectus and through University Website. The Entrance to MPhil comprises written examination and interview. Seventy five (75) marks are allocated for entrance written test and twenty five (25) marks for interview.
Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) Duration: 36 months; Intake: 10 (for both Regular and Part-Time PhD Programme). Mode of Admission: Merit in the Entrance Test and Interview The Eligibility Criterion (1) Masters Degree in English from a UGC recognized university with 55% marks in the subject concerned, with i) MPhil. in the subject concerned or ii) JRF/NET/SLET or iii) two research articles published in a refereed research journal or iv) teaching experience of not less than three years in a degree college. (2) Candidates working in a UGC recognized university and studied Master’s Degree prior to 1991 with 50% marks in subject concerned with the other compulsory requirements mentioned above, are also eligible to appear in the entrance test. Candidates who possess MPhil or who have qualified JRF/NET/SLET are exempted from entrance test. Such candidates will be given weightage in the following manner: 60% marks for MPhil, NET and SLET; and 70% marks for JRF/Government fellowship holders. However, such candidate can take the entrance test if they desire to secure more than 60% or 70% marks as the case may be. But the interview is compulsory for all of them. The Entrance for PhD comprises written test and interview. Seventy five (75) marks are allocated for written test and twenty five (25) marks for interview.

V: The Journal The Department of English MANUU brings out a bi-annual peer-reviewed international journal entitled Maulana Azad Journal of the English Language and Literature (MAJELL). The objective of this journal is to shape the literary and linguistic tastes of the scholars in keeping with the intellectual expansion of knowledge community in the present world. The Journal has already set out in its journey to provide distinctly varied results of research and areas of research to scholars. It is a non-profiting journal published in the months of March and September. The Journal accommodates Creative Writing, Poetry, articles on Language, and Literature
Blind-Reviewing All articles, write-ups, stories, and poems submitted are subjected to two blind-reviewing. The comments of the referees determine the publication of the submitted article/write-up.
Date of Submission The articles/write-up for March Issue must be sent by 15th January, and for September issue by 15 July every year. VI: The Conferences: The Department of English MANUU organizes national conferences regularly every year in the month of March to acquaint its students and scholars with the recent trends in literature and language so that they channel their creative proclivities in an advanced literary and linguistic culture. Up till now it had organised three national conferences. The first conference was held on 3rd and 4th March 2009. It was themed as New Areas of Research in the English Language and Teaching: Challenges and Perspectives. The second national conference was held on 23rd and 24th March 2010. It was themed as New Perspectives in Non-Native Literatures in English and the third conference was held on 9th and 10 March 2011; the theme of the conference was New Directions in Comparative Literatures in English.

IX: International/Foreign Students
The Department of English, MANUU offers MA, MPhil and PhD programmes o International/Foreign Students.
Maulana Azad National Urdu University considers and treats all those who are not the citizens of India or those who do not carry Indian passport as Foreign Nationals.
Foreign Nationals shall be considered for admission into both PG and Research Programmes offered through merit or entrance and interview modes respectively.
The notification to invite Indian students for applying into University Programmes shall also apply on Foreign Nationals. No separate notification shall be given to invite application from Foreign Nationals.
Fifteen percent of the seats are allocated to Foreign Nationals over and above the prescribed intake in any programme of the University
Those who are appearing for PG programmes are required to have education system of 10+2+3 or 12+3 years.
Foreign Nationals are required to fulfill the minimum eligibility criteria as prescribed for Indian students. If a Foreign National’s Board/Institution/University does not offer the programme prescribed as eligibility condition, an equivalent programme may be considered by the Department or Admission Committee.
Foreign Nationals applied in any programme offered through merit mode in qualifying degree examination are required to produce a certificate stating that their education programme is equivalent in terms of length of study and quality to the qualifying degree examination recognized by this University.
Foreign Nationals applied in any programme offered through entrance mode are required to go through the same procedure prescribed for the Indian nationals.
If a Foreign National is selected into any programme, he/she shall be sent the letter of admission through post as well as e-mail.
The Admission Committee that grants admission to Indian candidates shall also grant admission to Foreign Nationals on the recommendation of the Department Admission Committee.
If a Foreign National is selected into any programme, he/she shall produce the following documents: a) Student’s Visa; b) Medical Certificate prescribed by Govt. of India and c) Clearance from MEA
Documents to be submitted along with the Application Form:
All certificates and marks sheet or grade card from High School onwards with certified English translation(if the documents are in any other language);
A Letter of recommendation from the Principal/Director of the College/Centre/ University, where the candidate completed the studies last. The letter must be sent in sealed envelope or by e-mail to the Head of the Department in which the admission is sought.

Once a Foreign National is admitted into any University Programme, he/she shall be referred to as International Student.
The Foreigner's Registration Office All foreign students are necessarily required to register with the Foreigner's Registration Office (F.R.O.) within 14 days of their arrival in India. The Foreigner's Registration Office (F.R.O.) issues foreign national students a residential permit which is normally valid for a period of one year and it should be renewed by the foreign student 15 days before its expiry date. The documents required to be submitted at the time of registration are: i) A provisional admission/eligibility letter; ii) Passport with a student visa; iii) Residential proof; iv) Bonafide certificate and v) HIV certificate obtained from any recognized hospital on arrival in India
