The University launched its distance education programme in 1998 and now offers 3 Post-Graduate, 3 Under-Graduate, and 8 PG Diploma/Diploma/Certificate programmes in the distance mode, apart from the B.Ed. programme. All these programmes have been approved by DEC and the B.Ed. programme is recognized by the NCTE. The total number of students registered in distance education is over 1,00,000 spread over 169 study centres all over India. At present the University’s distance education support network has nine Regional Centers one each at New Delhi, Bangalore, Patna, Darbhanga, Kolkata, Mumbai, Bhopal, Srinagar and Ranchi; six Sub-Regional Centres one each at Jammu, Mewat, Lucknow, Sambhal, Hyderabad and Amaravati.  An Examination Centre has been established at Jeddah, (Kingdom of Saudi Arabia).

By imparting higher education through Urdu as the medium of instruction and by offering PG, UG, Diploma and Certificate Courses through the distance mode, MANUU ensures access and equity to all especially the disadvantaged groups. Moreover, the GoI policy on reservation is strictly implemented in the recruitment of faculty. The use of both print and electronic media to reach out to the unreached is the hallmark of the DDE programmes.

Right from the choice of the programmes to be offered, to the designing of the syllabus and implementing the same at the contact classes, the different departments of DDE ensure that the distinctive identity of Urdu university and its mandate is constantly under focus. The framing of syllabus with employability component, the introduction of courses bearing relevance to the present national and international needs and the contribution of the Directorate of Distance Education in providing instructional material in Urdu through large-scale translation work, helps translate the goals of MANUU into academic programmes.

MANUU is a non-affiliating University. However, the DDE ensures that in the syllabus design, the national character is maintained while the regional needs are also considered. Moreover, in the conduct of contact classes and examinations etc, DDE allows scope for regional considerations. There is flexibility in the choice of the Study Centre and in the choice of optional subjects as there is flexibility in the choice of the Exam Centre. Given the national character of MANUU, the DDE ensures a learner-centric and learner-friendly atmosphere to the distance learners.

Recently in a survey conducted by Careers360 (August 2010 issue) of the Outlook Group, the distance education system of MANUU was ranked 6th out of the 30 Best Distance Education Institues out of a total of 176 such institutes surveyed across India.
